Montage

For my montage project I wanted to be quite conceptual and minimalistic, I looked a little at Marianne Brandt's work and how she left the background plain and let the imagery speak for itself. This is what I tried to achieve in my montages. I chose the word 'future' and based them around how we are becoming a digitial society - good or bad.

Self-Portrait

For my self-portrait project I initially was thinking about doing different sides of myself in accordance to how other people view me. However I then realised it was SELF project so had a little think about how I see myself.

The self portraits are based around gender stereotypes, especially in reference to dress or body language. I hoped these would reflect my personal distaste for gender stereotypes and how I see myself in reguard to the 'norm'.

Xerox/Copier Art

For this project we had to utilize a photocopier or scanner to create images that would convey movement. I found this project really interesting because it was very experimental.

Here are some of the first experiments I did using my scanner:

From these I particularly liked the coin one as it created a liquid like effect, this made me experiment with the water in the Dr peper bottle. I really liked the effect this gave and took it onto my final photocopies.

Here are some of my final photocopies which I created using electrical tape and moved it across the surface to try and create the idea of movement. I particularly like the ones were it looks like the objects are stretched/elongated.

Final piece using the coins, this time I used two and silver ones which gave a more glisten-y/liquid effect.

I removed the label from the bottle so that you could see the water more, this is one of my favourites from the project:

Finally I tried writing/drawing things and moving them. The first being a word which I moved which created a a rather weird surreal effect. The second is a squiggly line which when I moved across the scanner bed created a heart monitor effect.

Pinhole Photography

This project was based around the idea of making our own pinhole camera and taking photographs using it. I used a shoebox to create mine as this was apparently the most reliable object for getting a photo.

As you can see my first attempt was completely unsuccessful as nothing appeared at all. However after making the hole bigger I got a few actual photos.

Photograms

These are my photogram experiments I did in the dark room, by placing objects over a piece of photo paper and then exposing it to light.

Scissors, plastic folders, bracelets, tea bag etc. I particularly liked the tea bag as I thought it looked a little bit like an eclispe.

Pins in a pringle lid, I wanted it to look like bacteria under a microscope. Not sure it was totally successful, but it looks pretty interesting.

Colour, Light, Movement and Space: Other

My second set of photos don't have a theme as such but I was trying to look moreso at light, movement and space, appose to colour. (or colours that were less bright and intrusive)

I spotted this canlid on the floor and like the way the light reflected off the wet surface. Also there is a grid in the form of the brick floor which added a nice contrast to the lid.

I took this photo from underneath a collapsed fence, looking through the metal bars at a derelict building. My hope was that the fence would split up the photo and create a 'journalistic' snapshot feel.

My attempt at trying to create a frame within a frame. I found this window that had no glass in it and thought it'd be rather nice to photograph. Works particularly well with 'colour' due to the bright green of the tree against the orange of the brickwall.

My final three photo's focused on 'sky' which is after all the source of all light. This photo was looking at the reflection of the clouds in the odeon windows. I liked the way the oden's blue front corresponded nicely with the colour of the sky itself.

Similar to the oden in terms of the reflection and the colours, however I wanted a different perspective for this shot. The straight up angle makes the building seem more dominant and leads up towards my original subject for this shot: the sky.

Looking at dissecting the photo completely in half, but still having the sky as the main component of the photograph.

Overall I found this project quite interesting in terms of noticing the environment around me and how I could photograph it, how to 'see shots' and use the frame to create new and interesting effects. Next time I would like to plan my shots and come up with more of a concept or idea, appose to going out and simply observing.

Colour, Light, Movement, and Space: Signs

This was the first Audio Visual project and a kind of playful experiment for me. I'm not really a photographer so I decided to take a walk around Lincoln and take pictures of things that caught my eye in relevance to Colour, Light, Movement or Space. I came out with two sets of photo's, the first was signs, which focused mainly on colour:

This photo turned out to be a bit of a happy accident as I didn't intend to get my feet in it. I wanted to create perspective and a 'dropping' effect in relevance to the sign on the wall. However by my feet appearing in the photo, I feel it adds an air of mystery, have I fell down the sudden drop, or am I going to jump?

This caught my attention because of the bright red colour, alike to most of the signs in my photos. I thought it was nice because of the grafittied heart too. I wanted to make the bin look more dominant to the surroundings so took it close-up and from a lower angle.

Observing the graffiti invading signs (man made object) and the signs invading the natural environent (trees) and how those colours work together in a photograph.

Trying to dissect the photo into three parts, sky, wall, and floor. The light is represented by the sky, and the shadow and the colour by the sign.

Once again I was observing graffiti on signs, and how people seem to vandalise brightly coloured things. I like this photo because the red stop sign really stands out from the bricks behind it. The angle (looking up) combined with the intense colour makes the sign look foreboding.

I liked the way that this would have once been an intensely red sign but now the colour was fading/rusting away. I also tried to create perspective leading 'inside' to the area were the valve was located.
